What is a podplay?
A podplay is what happens when a radio drama meets a walking tour. Each of Neworld’s podplays is a fifteen-minute adventure in Vancouver’s downtown. You will hear characters, story and dialogue – just like a radio drama. And you will hear instructions that will navigate your walk through the city streets. The result is a unique perspective on our city, and the many stories and histories of the people who live here.
Do I have to walk the play the day it comes out?
No. Once you download the podplay it is yours. You can choose to listen to it today in your living room, this weekend on the street, or next month when your relatives are visiting. You are in charge. You can listen to it once or 100 times.
Where do I go to listen to the podplays?
Each podplay is written for a different neighbourhood in downtown Vancouver. Each week we will send you an email with instructions on where to start and a link to a Google Map that shows the route you will walk. This information is also on our website now. Click on Map and Directions. If you are not sure where to go, drop us a line and we can help you find your way!
What if I don’t have an MP3 player?
You can listen to the podplays at home. Some of our out of town friends have done a virtual walk via Google Street View. But to experience the play on the street you do need a portable device. We sometimes organize live listening events on site where you can borrow an MP3 player from us. Subscribe to Neworld’s newsletter to get news of upcoming events.
Most podcasts on iTunes are free? Why is this one $20-$45?
There are over 50 writers, composers, musicians, actors, directors, dramaturgs, sound technicians and editors involved in developing and producing all ten podplays. Your subscription fees go directly towards artist fees and royalties. As a not-for-profit, charitable arts organization, Neworld Theatre is profoundly aware that our public funding is, in part, an expression of trust. We acknowledge this responsibility by engaging in the market economy, knowing that our audience values our work as relevant and meaningful to their lives. This support is best demonstrated in live theatre by box office sales. Or, in the case of PodPlays: purchasing a subscription.
