the hereticWritten by Christian O'Connor Shadbolt Centre for the Arts May 4 - 6, 2006 Directed and designed by Jonathan Ryder, and featuring John Murphy. Produced in association with (r)evolution theatre. Meet Jesus Murphy, the alter–ego of a gentle man with a tortured religious upbringing. In an attempt to exorcise these demons, Murphy – an evangelical atheist – incisively and hilariously tears a strip off God, fellow-Catholics, the Four Horsemen, Mother Theresa, Puff Daddy and anybody else who unwittingly provokes his ire. Except Muslims. Jesus doesn't know the first thing about Muslims. A riotous, risky and penetrating examination of Catholic fundamentalism. Next, the boys are off to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, August 6 – 28, 2006. "The Heretic is a scary, brave and ferocious attack on Judeo-Christian religion and its doctrines. John Murphy's performance is reminiscent of Lenny Bruce. But this is no simple rant. The writing is clever and sophisticated, the production slick and the acting phenomenal. Easily the best show I saw in this year's fringe." |
